[edit] Description

The Groovy Gang is a group of mentally disturbed amateur detectives that travel the world in a van to solve mysteries that may or may not exist. The group consists of the insane, violent-tempered, and self-righteous leader Ted, the weak-willed kidnapping victim Patty, the angry, feminist-extremist lesbian Val, the paranoid, jittery hippie Sonny and the terrifying, possibly possessed dog Groovy. While the Gang purportedly existed to solve mysteries, Ted never seemed to have a clear definition of "mystery", and, in reality, the Gang seemed to make their living by looting the buildings they would break into during their adventures.

The Venture Family first encountered the Groovy Gang in Baja while exploring a cave, where Hank and Dean Venture were brutally murdered by Sonny and Groovy in a fit of terror. After commiting the murder, Sonny and Groovy disposed of Hank and Dean's mutilated corpses in a hole. Sometime later, the Groovy Gang stumbled upon the Venture compound after running out of gas, which Ted took to be a sign from God that a mystery was there to be solved. After breaking into the compound, the Gang eventually stumbled upon Rusty Venture's army of Hank and Dean clone slugs, when they were suddenly accosted by a confused Venturestein and a spiritually reinvigorated, rage-fueled Brock Samson. In an extremely short, extremely one-sided battle, Brock broke Ted's arm, fatally shot Sonny with Ted's handgun, and headbutted Ted to death, while Venturestein fatally strangled Groovy. Patty and Val fled the Venture compound and apparently survived, while Rusty Venture planned to use Sonny and Ted's corpses to advance his Venturestein project. Venturestein used Groovy's hide to craft an ugly shoe, which he planned to give to a prostitute in exchange for sex.

Ted and Sonny later appear alongside Venturestein in [Venture Libre], referred to as "Tedstein" and "Sonnystein."

[edit] Inspiration

  • The Groovy Gang is very clearly inspired by the mystery-solving gang in "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" However, each member of the Groovy Gang is also based on a famous 20th century maniac.
  • Ted

Scooby-Doo: Fred Jones, the upbeat, confident leader of the mystery-solving gang.

Maniac: Ted Bundy, the charismatic serial killer who murdered at least 30 people. Maybe with a bit of influence from Charles Manson as well, who was also the leader of a criminal cult.

  • Val

Scooby-Doo: Velma Dinkley, the nerdy girl in glasses who acted as the brain of the gang.

Maniac: Valerie Solanas, the radical feminist-extremist who wrote the SCUM Manifesto, which argued that women should overthrow the earth and eradicate the male sex. Most famous for her attempted assassination of famous artist Andy Warhol.

  • Patty

Scooby-Doo: Daphne Blake, the attractive, wealthy redhead in Scooby-Doo's gang.

Maniac: Patty Hearst, the wealthy heiress of William Randolph Hearst who was kidnapped and brainwashed, leading her to become a bank robber.

  • Sonny and Groovy

Scooby-Doo: Shaggy Rogers and Scooby-Doo, the paranoid hippie and his best friend, a Great Dane with the ability to speak rudamentary English.

Maniac: David Berkowitz, the serial killer known as the Son of Sam, and his neighbor's dog Harvey that Berkowitz claimed was possessed by an ancient demon and commanded him to commit murders.
